A Chinese prisoner of conscience died after being injected with unknown drugs at the hands of Chinese regime authorities.
Yang Fenglian was arrested in 2011 for refusing to stop practicing Falun Gong, a type of Chinese meditation practice that has been severely persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) since July 1999.
Falun Gong, also called Falun Dafa, is a traditional body-mind-spirit practice that was made public in 1992 and became widely practiced across China in the 1990s. It is grounded in ancient Chinese philosophies to uphold the tenets of truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance.
Yang went on a hunger strike to protest her wrongful imprisonment, and she was injected with unknown drugs by CCP officials, according to Minghui.org, a website dedicated to publishing information about Falun Gong, in a report on Aug. 16.
“When her son arrived at the local detention center, he was heartbroken to see her left lying on the ground and unattended. He called a taxi to drive her to Jixi Coalmine Hospital, which declined to take her due to her critical condition,” the report stated.
When he was able to get her to Jixi Weixiao Hospital, she was diagnosed with a brain hemorrhage. After she showed signs of improvement, the report stated, she was taken to a mental hospital.
“As soon as Ms. Yang was brought to the mental hospital, she was tied up to a bed. Her husband checked her out of the hospital two days later, as she didn’t have any history of mental problems. By then, Ms. Yang’s family had spent more than 20,000 yuan in total on her treatments. They didn’t try a new hospital afterwards because they had run out of money,” Minghui reported.
“Yang had trouble keeping food or water down. The injection site kept festering and oozing out fluid. She lived the last three years of her life in extreme pain,” Minghui said. She died three years after she was arrested.
Forced Organ Harvesting
In a recent interview with Epoch Times, University of Manitoba associate professor Dr. Maria Cheung, a researcher who published “Cold Genocide: Falun Gong in China” via Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal, said the Chinese Communist Party’s campaign against Falun Gong could be considered a genocide.
“For the Falun Gong case, it is not only the physical. The physical cannot be separated from the psychological aspect, the mental aspect, and the social aspect,” she said.
Dr. Glynn Gilcrease III, a medical oncologist at the University of Utah School of Medicine, said that forced organ harvesting is the state-sanctioned practice of removing organs from non-consenting prisoners of conscience, noting that Falun Gong is the main target. “This is only done in China,” Gilchrist said, according to The Epoch Times.
Last year, human rights organization Freedom House released an exhaustive report on the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China.
The group called the degree of persecution as “very high,” but it noted that the CCP’s attempts to eradicate the spiritual group have failed, and millions of people continue to practice Falun Gong in China—mostly in secret.
Former CCP dictator Jiang Zemin ordered Chinese security forces to “eradicate” Falun Gong, and practitioners were harassed and fired from their jobs, sent to slave labor camps, and were tortured in attempts to get them to renounce their practice. Even women in the 60s, 70s, or even in their 80s aren’t spared from the abuse.
